In this jointly taught 6-day workshop with master metalsmith, Jack da Silva, and master enamelist, Judy Stone, we will learn each step in the creation of enameled vessels, from shaping raw forms to the complex layering of color.
Days 1-3 Jack da Silva will explore vessel-making from flat sheet and spun copper through sinking and angle raising. We will modify these forms by adding texture, low relief using hammers, and piercing to create negative space.
Days 4-6, when our vessels are ready, we will enamel them with Judy Stone, who will focus on approaches for working on dimensional objects. She will share her distinctive enamel layering techniques, in which she creates a canvas of sgraffitoed liquid enamel and then builds up complex, painterly color through thin enamel layers that are applied wet. All surfaces will be enameled.
Some enameling and forming experience is desirable.
Jack da Silva is a third generation gravestone maker from a family of artisans and performers, and is known for teaching metalsmithing and anticlastic raising, and for his research of various metalworking methods. He is currently on the SNAG board.
